Spencer must’ve known that as soon as I had arrived at the mansion, I would lose myself. Time slipped by as I swam laps, floated on my back, and swam deep underwater. After a dive that would’ve made my mother gloat shamelessly about how well I had been trained to swim, my stomach growled. I grabbed on to the edge of the pool to peer into the bedroom beyond the window and saw dinner had been set up on a round table, which sat between the sitting and sleeping areas.

Famished, I lifted myself out of the water, my body dripping wet.

“Good Lord,” I heard Spencer say.

I whipped my face toward the far end area of the patio. Spencer was standing there. The tired way which his shoulders slumped and the sweat glistening across his face were telltale signs of how worn-out he was. However, the ravenous look in his eyes told a different story.
